What does it mean to live a legacy?
I truly believe that each person on this earth wants to make an impact; to be remembered; to make a contribution. Similar to the old adage about having to walk the walk, not just talk the talk, you must live your life full of actions that will contribute to the legacy you want to leave.
Walt Whitman said, "That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse." You. Each and every one of you get the opportunity to contribute to the story of our world; that also means each and every one of our students. We live in a unique era where we have the opportunity to not just have our contributions to the world written about, but to be able to write about those contributions. You and I are lucky. We get to be a tiny part of every verse written by every student, for they each have a contribution to make.
But in order to write those verses, we must first live those verses.
Ideals are great. You've discovered your genius? Awesome!
But action makes a difference. Action makes the impact. Action makes a legacy.
When you look back at your life, whether you're a famous scientist or your grandchildren are reminiscing, your actions will make headlines.
Find your dream, follow your passion, live your legacy.
As teachers, we must remember that
Every single student has a story to tell and we get to be part of the pages.
Every single one of our students has the opportunity to live a life worth writing about.
Every single one of our students has the opportunity to live a life worth reading about.
Every single one of our students has the opportunity to write that story for others to read.
It may not be literal writing. They may be creating in iMovie. Coding a new video game. Creating a new song or work of art. Connecting with the world.
Our students are makers.
Our students are writers.
Our students are illustrators.
Our students are musicians.
Our students are living their legacy.
Our students are living a life worth reading and writing about.
How are you helping your students live and leave a legacy?
